Violation of Residents Rights
Nursing Home Negligence
Nursing homes are places for people who either cannot take care of themselves or need help taking care of themselves. For whatever reason, this means to some that nursing home residents have limited rights; this is simply not the case.
Nursing home residents have the following rights:
- The Right to be Informed
- The Right to be Treated Respectfully
- The Right to File Complaints
- The Right to Make Choices
- The Right to be Good Health and Health Decisions
- The Right to Privacy
Causes of Nursing Home Abuse
It is often difficult to determine whether your loved one has been a victim of nursing home abuse. Many nursing home residents lack the ability to communicate this abuse to their loved ones, and others do not report the abuse for fear of retaliation by the abusive staff member.
The following factors commonly contribute to nursing home abuse and neglect:
- Bedsores
- Frequent or unexplained injuries
- Poor hygiene
- Malnutrition/dehydration
- Social withdrawal
- The appearance of being overly medicated
