Requiring Appropriate Care From Doctors
The spinal cord and neurological system are among the most delicate parts of the body. Any sort of pressure on the spinal cord, whether from a bone, disk, hematoma or trauma, can cause serious neurologic injuries that can cause symptoms that run the gamut from simple numbness to permanent paralysis. When the injury is to the lower spinal cord it can cause a condition known as cauda equina syndrome, which, if left untreated, can lead to permanent paralysis.
Neurologic injuries can also occur away from the spine and involve the nerves in our arms and legs. A well-known complication of trauma to the arms and legs is known as a compartment syndrome, where the muscles and tissues of the arms and/or legs swell due to trauma and choke off the blood supply to the nerves. This results in a devastating neurologic injury which renders the affected limb useless and may lead to therapeutic amputation.
